"Reconsidering Behavior Management in Pediatric Dentistry"

Course Outline

Why We Do What We Do - Contemporary Behavior Science Meets Pediatric Dentistry  (Friday)
Synopsis:  Understanding behavior and its developmental, social, and cultural contexts is key to gaining cooperation from a child during dental treatment, communicating effectively with parents, and maintaining office harmony. This seminar will explore concepts from recent research in behavioral science and is designed to be relevant to pediatric dentists of all experience levels and practice types.

Learning Objectives:
1. Be familiar with current brain and behavior science
2. Understand how components of the dental experience are processed within the brain regions
3. Be more able to select effective countermeasures to challenging/distressed patient and parent behaviors

Send Me in Coach - Applying Behavioral Tools in Pediatric Dentistry (Saturday)
Synopsis:  Dentists today need more parent approved and non-pharmacologic behavior management options with low cost, high efficiency, and efficacy – the Holy Grail of pediatric dentistry!  This seminar offers the opportunity to learn and role play methods used in schools, in pediatric medicine, and by dental colleagues.

Learning Objectives:
1. Have practiced controlling a situation without seeming controlling or overbearing
2. Become more effective behavior coaches for the child patient and their parent(s)
3. Have thought through potential strategies to move a child from resisting treatment towards accepting dental care confidently
