Course Outline:

This course will comprehensively review epidemiology, diagnosis and emergency treatment as well as late complications of dental trauma.  In addition, preventive approaches will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed on best current practice based on literature, current guidelines of AAPD, IADT and AAE and clinical cases.

The first part will focus on the important role of first responders to dental trauma, both in regards to diagnosis and emergency treatment.  All major dental injuries will be explored and recommended treatments presented.

In the second part the focus will be on late complications including pulpal and periodontal issues.  Clinical cases will be presented to illustrate how to recognize those as well as what treatment options are there for those complications, including how to treat inflammatory root resorption and how and when it is possible to attempt pulpal revascularization.

The third part will focus on situations when the tooth is severely damaged to the point it has very questionable prognosis.  In those cases, a priority is to preserve the alveolar bone until the child is fully-grown and implant can be placed.  Treatment options like decoronation, root submersion and transplantation will be reviewed in this part.

The last presentation will review preventive measures for dental trauma, both educational strategies as well as what is known from literature about different protective devices.
