"The Continuum of Orthodontics, with a sharp focus on Preventive, Interceptive and Early Orthodontics"

Outline

This presentation is designed to serve as a reminder and an update for practitioners who manage developing occlusions.
Pediatric dentists are trained to assess patients and collect data key to early identification of possible disturbances to the normal development of desirable occlusion. Early intervention may prevent or limit the severity of problems.  While comprehensive orthodontics, including banding and bracketing, orthopedic correction with appliances like headgears, etc. is important, preventive and interceptive orthodontic treatment in the mixed dentition can help prevent or minimize malocclusions.  To do so, the practitioner must understand normal and atypical growth and development, as well as the importance of space preservation, guidance interventions and corrective appliances in the developing occlusion.  The lecture will cover the continuum of orthodontics from ideal occlusion, deviations from the normal, diagnosis, current state of the art concepts in interceptive and early orthodontic treatment.
